I wanted to write a post about an ongoing obsession of mine for as long as I can remember, Korean pop. It started one night while I was surfing Youtube that I started watching the following video from the K-pop group Girls Generation.
It was interesting video and considering I don’t speak Korean it was great to just watch a video and analyze it from a purely aesthetic point of view and how the video tells a story.
I have been hooked ever since and over the years I have watched many Girl’s Generation videos, Genie is one of my favorites. I always look up the English lyrics for each song, but these songs are beautiful in Korean.
It is also kinda cool to watch Girls Generation grow as a group over the years.
My two favorite songs from Girls Generation are these two songs Maybe, Baby & Promise.
As all artists do, some of the members of Girls Generation went solo. One of the Artists, Jessica, came out with her single Fly (among others) and it is the song that has gotten me through a lot. The English and Korean versions of this song are really amazing.
I listen to this song just before I start writing.
The last video I wanted to share another Girls Generation alum Taeyeon, this is really an amazing song and I love listening to it daily.
I chose to write this post because one of my New Years resolutions is to learn Korean. I purchased my 12-month subscription to Rosetta Stone. Korean is such a beautiful language. I realized how much K-pop has been a part of my music playlist over the last year and I thought it would be great share this with my fellow bloggers.
I am also putting South Korea on my list of travel destinations in the following year.

If you haven’t checked out BTS, you need to! They’re probably the biggest group in South Korea right now, and they are absolutely incredible. I’m just glad that this has finally become a legit post! Thanks for writing this 🙂

I used to be obsessed with Kpop and other Asian pop (Japanese was my first obsession). I went through a phase but phased out of it a couple years ago. I think I watched one too many Korean dramas. But there are days when I miss it – it’s such a different feel from American shows, American music. Girls Generation is a good group, I know “Genie” and a few of their other songs. Just nothing that came out in the last 3 or 4 years lol! That’s cool you’re going to learn Korean though, it’s such a pretty language!

It is a pretty language. I always wanted to learn a new language and I need something outside of my writing. I mean writing is life, but can’t be my whole life. Listening to Korean pop really opened my eyes to music beyond the American scene. I love music, I used to listen to Japanese musicians from my old games like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. There is something amazing about foreign music. There is a real story behind a lot of the songs.

That’s a great motivation! I did teach myself the Korean alphabet at one point (where I could at least read the letters, even if I couldn’t understand them haha). It did the same eye opening thing for me. I think that’s why I became fascinated by it. As Americans, we’re surrounded by one sort of thing, and watching, listening, to other cultures makes us realize there’s more out there. And there’s also a lot of good music 🙂

You mentioning K-pop in a blog a few weeks ago inspired me to give it a shot. One of my best friends listens to it obsessively so I heard the names of a few groups before, but never particular songs. He recommended a whole bunch for me to listen to, but GG were the ones I totally fell in love with. They’re awesome!!!

I love Girls’ Generation!! They were also the first K-pop group I got into and remain my favorite. 😊 The first song of theirs that I heard was I Got A Boy in 2013!

Hiya! This is Summersday from UntamedMind — thanks for stopping by over there. I think that this post about K-POP was cool. Recently I stumbled into … is there a word for it? Korean romantic comediess. I finished Boys over flowers and even went on to Meteor Garden, the Chinese version, finishing tonight. I could look at it as cotton candy (which it is) or as a fun, easy, positive antidote to the blue-black moods that come with the bipolar. Still, wanted to come by and say hi, will do it again. BTW if you like the K-Romances I am very happy with the new series Mr. Sunshine, which is more like bittersweet chocolate but tasty intellectually. Best!
